BermudAir
BermudAir was conceived to provide frequent‚ year-round, well-timed and comfortable flights for business and premium leisure travellers between Bermuda and the East Coast of the U.S. BermudAir‘s dual-class cabin will offer a choice of Business and Economy seating. In both cabins passengers enjoy premium hospitality standards. Their customers enjoy extra comfort in Business Class with priority boarding, attractive baggage allowances, extended legroom, upgraded complimentary drinks and snacks, and additional personal space from never having another passenger in the seat next to them. In the Economy Plus cabin customers still enjoy free drinks and snacks and a superior level of service not encountered in economy on most airlines. In both cabins, customers are offered free-of-charge inflight entertainment via their own devices, as well as internet connectivity for messaging.
Having previously worked with People Business to support him with HR requirements, the airline’s CFO approached People Business in February 2023 to help BermudAir set up their HR function.
How People Business assisted BermudAir
Initially, People Business put together an employment contract for employees and a contract for services for contractors, together with a suite of HR policies to ensure legal compliance.
As BermudAir grew closer to operating their first flight, it became apparent that they would need a full-time HR resource moving forward and a Head of HR was appointed. We worked with the Head of HR to support the business and then were asked to lead the vetting process for their pilots and cabin crew. Aviation regulations require all employees to undergo criminal record checks and full five-year employment history referencing; any employment gaps must be covered by personal references.
Due to the speed at which BermudAir needed to train and have people in place, this became a critical business activity for them with tight deadlines. Vetting started at the end of July and by the middle of September 2023 (within the space of six weeks) we had 43 people fully vetted and able to participate in the security training and operate the flights. BermudAir’s maiden voyage from Bermuda to Boston and Westchester County, NY, took place on 1st September. Daily services to Fort Lauderdale followed soon after.
